PRACTICAL INFORMATION
A master of the craft.
Under the guidance of David Santandreu – the result of years of research, experimentation, and field practice – you will enter into ancestral expertise, refined by the study of ancient texts, botany, and experimental archaeology. This expertise, forged in rigor and a love for blue, is shared by David with a limited number of students, respecting authentic techniques.
Exceptional vats.
The workshop is organized around six 250-liter vats and three 1,000-liter vats, each patiently prepared according to recipes inspired by traditional Moroccan techniques. These baths, with their subtle aromas, reveal shades of blue of unparalleled richness, from clear sky to deep midnight blue.
Training at the heart of living matter.
Throughout the workshop, you will study vat behavior, observe different fermentations, and learn to recognize their subtle signs. You will acquire precise control and maintenance of these living vats to make them last, evolve, and produce the most stable and luminous blues.
From plant to pigment.
You will also participate in extracting natural indigo from fresh leaves (depending on the season), discovering every step that leads from plant matter to pure pigment. Together, we will prepare nilj – indigo compost – according to traditional methods, an essential base for preparing vats and preserving the coloring matter.
A comprehensive learning experience.
Over five days, you will work with noble fibers – wool, cotton, linen, silk – and discover the delicate science that brings color to life. You will learn to prepare, control, maintain, and evolve living vats, mastering fiber immersion, removal, oxidation, and finishing… until you achieve the blue you imagined. Dyeing of samples, skeins, and fabric yardage to explore all possibilities.
